Sustainability

By working sympathetically with the natural contours across our uniquely folded landscape to optimise aspect to the sun, the rugged pastoral land was crafted into a sustainable vineyard known today as Seaview.
Solar Energy Generation

Harnessing the Power of the Coast

Seaview Estate generates over 500,000kWh of renewable energy each year from our rooftop solar array. This is enough to power 71 New Zealand homes annually. In addition, all purchased electricity is certified renewable, ensuring that our operations produce zero Scope 2 emissions from energy use.

Our coastal environment presents challenges but also great opportunities. Harnessing solar power reflects our commitment to sustainable innovation – reducing reliance on the national grid and furthering our goal of producing wines with minimal environmental impact.

Waste Management

Closing the Loop

Sustainability at Seaview Estate is grounded in practical systems that respect both land and resources. Winemaking by-products, including grape marc and lees, are composted on-site and returned to the vineyard — improving soil structure and supporting a circular nutrient cycle.

We also extend this approach beyond the winery. Through the Repost initiative, damaged vineyard posts are repointed and reused in other agricultural systems, extending their lifespan and contributing to a more sustainable operation.

Building Soil Health and Vineyard Resilience

Across Seaview, cover cropping plays an important role in supporting soil structure, vine health and biodiversity. We use a combination of inter-row planting and alternating cover crop rows to promote natural drainage, reduce erosion and increase soil carbon.

Species selection is tailored to vineyard goals and soil type but typically includes a balance of cereals, legumes and flowering species. These contribute organic matter, improve nitrogen levels and attract beneficial insects that help manage vineyard pests naturally.

Our approach to cover cropping reflects out wider philosophy – working with the land to build resilience, improve soil vitality and maintain balanced, sustainable vineyard year after year.

Native Planting

Enhancing Native Ecology

At Seaview Estate, our native planting programme is guided by a long-term vision to strengthen the landscape, support biodiversity, and embed our vineyard within a thriving coastal ecosystem. By reintroducing native species across our home site, we build a deeper connection between land and wine.

Each planting initiative is intentional, establishing ecological pockets throughout the property to enhance resilience and promote environmental balance. Native shrubs and trees provide shelter, reinforce soil structure, support local wildlife, and complement the distinctive character of our coastal environment.

The result is a living landscape shaped by nature and strengthened by our ongoing commitment to quality, sustainability, and place.
